Visperterminen

Visperterminen is an independent municipality at the head of the Visp valley. The main village lies at around 1,350m above sea level and is 15 minutes away from Visp by car. The municipality is home to 1,350 inhabitants. It covers an area of 52km2 and stretches from the Vispa river on the valley floor up to the lofty peaks at the end of the wildly romantic Nanztal valley.

The sunny mountain community is known for its Heida white wine, which grows in one of the highest vineyards in Europe (the “Riebe”). Until around 1990, the “Tärbiner” – as the inhabitants of Visperterminen call themselves – still lived according to the annual cycle of farm work known as “transhumance”, in which livestock are moved between different altitudes depending on the season. The layout of the settlements and infrastructure reflects this itinerant way of life, and the landscape is marked by a multitude of paths and trails.

The municipality offers a wide range of hiking and biking opportunities in summer, as well as a small, quiet skiing area with snowshoe trails and a sledge run in winter. Few other villages in Valais are as busy when it comes to culture, traditions and customs. There are almost 30 active clubs in the fields of sport, music, culture and agriculture.
