Baltschieder

The municipality of Baltschieder lies on the right bank of the Rhone in the heart of the Upper Valais. The neighbouring municipality of Visp has recorded the highest percentage growth in the resident population in Valais in recent years. From 500 inhabitants in 1981 to currently more than 1300 residents, the population of Baltschieder has more than doubled.

Through the active village associations, the native population and the many "newcomers" find a community with a social network and make Baltschieder anything but a sleeping community for commuters. Nevertheless, most of the Baltschieder resident workplaces are located in Visp and its surroundings. The formerly important agriculture exists today only in the form of sheep farming and few livestock farmers. The attractive black-nosed sheep in particular, contribute a lot to the village culture.

The increase in population also led to brisk construction activity, especially in the valley floor towards the west. The architectural eye-catcher of the village remains the old village centre with the chapel dedicated to Saint Sebastian. The municipality is also the starting point for the wild and romantic Baltschieder valley, one of the few side valleys in the Valais that can only be reached on foot. It is part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site.
