Chippis

The municipality of Chippis was founded on 11 March 1449. Covering just 198 hectares, it is one of the smallest municipalities in the Canton of Valais. Despite its modest size, Chippis became the canton’s most important industrial centre in the early 1900s with the establishment of the aluminium plant.

The transformation of this small village into the “aluminium town” was accompanied by significant migration, which also helped shape its identity. From that period onwards, Chippis learned to integrate newcomers from across Europe into its long-established population, whose roots largely lie in the Val d’Anniviers. This cosmopolitan character remains a source of pride and is celebrated every August during the traditional intercultural festival “A la rencontre de l’autre” (“Meeting the Other”).

The harmonious coexistence of these diverse cultures is the result of a strong commitment to integration, which is one of the municipality’s key priorities. This is supported by a high-quality school system, socio-cultural activities, and the many local associations that contribute to community life.
