Riederalp
The municipality of Riederalp was created on 1 November 2003 by the merger of the three municipalities of Ried-Mörel, Greich and Goppisberg. It stretches from the valley floor (718m above sea level) near the Zen hohen Flühen chapel, through Moosfluh (2,333m above sea level) and on to the Aletsch Glacier, the longest glacier in the Alps at 23km.
Located in the UNESCO Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch World Heritage Site, tourism is the driving economic force in the municipality. With more than 6,000 beds for 480 inhabitants, it generates around 300,000 overnight stays each year. Opened in 2008, the suspension bridge is a big draw for hikers in summer, and connects car-free Riederalp with Belalp.
The towns of Ried-Mörel, Greich and Goppisberg can be reached by car, and Riederalp can be reached from Mörel via the large-car cableway (Mörel – Riederalp-Mitte) or a six-seater gondola lift (Mörel – Ried-Mörel – Riederalp-West).
