Mörel-Filet

Mörel-Filet was once ruled by knights and lords, and the ruins of the castles of Mangepan and Thurmberg above the village bear witness to life in the 11th century. The current municipality of roughly 700 inhabitants was created in 2009 from the merger of Mörel and Filet.

The district capital is centrally located, just ten minutes from the ski slopes of Riederalp and the agglomeration of Brig-Visp-Naters. Thanks to the half-hourly service of the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway (MGB), Mörel-Filet is very well connected to public transport. Jobs are in remarkably good supply, with 400 in total, and the number of businesses in the service and craft sectors is even more astonishing. Everything you need for daily life is available here. Mörel also caters for all stages of compulsory education. Lunch and before- and after-school care have been offered in Mörel since autumn 2019. The kindergarten is organised regionally, and is situated in the neighbouring community of Bitsch, four kilometres away.

Mörel-Filet is a biodiversity hotspot and has implemented numerous projects to conserve and increase species diversity, such as the restoration of the Salzgäb chestnut forest. These efforts were rewarded in 2016 with the World Heritage Crystal from the UNESCO World Heritage Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch Foundation. The Salzgäb chestnut forest, the Sand floodplain and the Tunetsch forest reserve are valuable recreational areas.

In addition, the municipality also strives to use sustainable energy in line with the Energy City label. Energy efficiency is taken into account for housing development promotion, for example, and district heating was set up during the renovation of the municipal administration building.
