Unterbäch

Unterbäch lies at the heart of Upper Valais and can be reached quickly and easily by car (via Visp or Turtmann) or by public transport (cable car). The roughly 420 inhabitants of Unterbäch have found a little corner of paradise to live in.

For hikers (there are 57km of hiking trails) and mountain bikers, this small but impressive holiday resort is the perfect starting point for a tour. Families will enjoy exploring how Valais’s old bisse irrigation system worked at the Suonen- und Sudelpark, which is part of a large children’s playground. The Ginals-Unterbäch ski area has 20 kilometres of quiet pistes with guaranteed snow, and is an insider tip amongst connoisseurs. Non-skiers can enjoy the five-kilometre-long sledge run or a winter hike or snowshoe walk.

Five restaurants and hotels are available to cater to your every need. In addition to the grocery store, Unterbäch also has a sports shop, a jewellery shop, a hairdressing salon, a farm shop, a knitting shop and a fish farm.

By the way, Unterbäch is known as the birthplace of women’s suffrage in Switzerland. In March 1957, women were allowed to go the polls here for the first time ever in Switzerland.
