Zermatt

Zermatt lies at an altitude of 1,620 metres at the foot of the world-famous Matterhorn and is surrounded by 38 of the 76 European four-thousand-metre peaks. Thanks to its southern location, it enjoys a mild climate and long periods of sunshine.

The municipality has about 6,000 permanent residents. During the peak season, there can be up to 35,000 people staying in Zermatt. Alpinists, ski enthusiasts, thrill-seekers and nature lovers all meet in Zermatt, which has one of the longest winter seasons in the Alps. The ski paradise is divided into three varied and interconnected regions. If you include the ski areas located in Italy, Zermatt has access to 360km of marked slopes. In summer, hiking is the municipality’s trump card. The pure natural surroundings of its 400km-long network of hiking trails feature idyllic valleys and crystal-clear lakes. Chamois and ibex, as well as edelweiss, gentian and alpine roses make frequent appearances.

At peak times, Zermatt’s population increases to that of a small town. As a result, the municipality offers a range of services and leisure activities you might expect to see in a city. But the car-free tourist resort – accessible by shuttle train from Täsch – also benefits from a varied and romantic Alpine setting, which is also reflected in the town’s 500-year-old wooden houses and picturesque neighbourhoods.
