Savièse
Located on the right bank of the Rhône and on a magnificent sunny plateau, the municipality of Savièse overlooks Sion, the capital of the Canton of Valais. Comprising six villages, its distinctive territory stretches from the valley floor to the mountains, offering its residents a warm and ideal living environment.
Although situated very close to the city and its amenities, Savièse has succeeded in preserving its strong village identity, deeply rooted in a rich and fascinating history. Many of its longstanding traditions have endured through the centuries and remain vibrant to this day.
The municipality has also invested in modern and functional infrastructure that meets the key needs of its population. This has made Savièse increasingly attractive, contributing to significant population growth over the past decade.
Savièse boasts enchanting and picturesque landscapes that have inspired numerous artists who spent time in the municipality. Their works gave rise to an artistic movement now known as the “School of Savièse” (École de Savièse). Like many visitors, these artists fell in love with the terraced vineyards, meadows interspersed with hedgerows and groves, the traditional irrigation channels (bisses), mountain streams, the vast alpine pastures of the Sanetsch region, the source of the Sarine River, and the Tsanfleuron Glacier.
These landscapes are a source of pride for the local population and have shaped the values and character of the people of Savièse. This spirit is embodied in a motto that has become emblematic of all the municipality’s villages: “Pa capona”, meaning “Never give up.”
Covering an area of 7,109 hectares, Savièse is one of the canton’s major wine-growing regions, with 274 hectares of vineyards. Its Muscat wine is highly appreciated by wine enthusiasts, musicians, and many others alike. It has helped forge the reputation of Savièse for hospitality and warm welcomes, qualities that are renowned far beyond the municipality’s borders.
