Icogne

Icogne is located in the Canton of Valais, a mountainous canton in the Alps in the far south-west of Switzerland. The canton is divided into eight socio-economic regions, and Icogne belongs to the Sierre region, bordering the Canton of Bern to the north. Situated at the western edge of the Louable Contrée, near the Lienne Valley, Icogne overlooks Sion, the capital of the Canton of Valais.

The municipality is the birthplace of Roger Bonvin, the first Valaisan to serve as President of the Swiss Confederation. Covering an area of 2,483 hectares, the territory extends along the Lienne Valley and at the westernmost end of Crans-Montana. Icogne was first mentioned in 1234 under the name Ucogni and has been an autonomous section of the greater community of Lens since at least the 14th century. It became an independent municipality in 1905.

The municipal territory consists mainly of alpine pastures, forests, agricultural land and building zones. Unlike many municipalities in Valais, Icogne does not have any vineyards or wine-growing areas.
