Saint-Maurice

With a territory stretching from the banks of the Rhône River at an altitude of 414 metres to the summit of the Cime de l’Est at 3,178 metres, Saint-Maurice is a charming town whose wide range of tourist, cultural, and sporting activities delights both visitors and residents alike.

Saint-Maurice is particularly renowned for the historic site of the Abbey of Saint-Maurice, founded in 515 in honour of Saint Maurice and his companions. As a result, the town is an important stop along the Via Francigena, a Cultural Route of the Council of Europe.

The Fairies’ Cave (Grotte aux Fées), the Castle, the Historic Fortresses, the nearby Thermal Baths, the Théâtre du Martolet, and the various art galleries also contribute to the town’s cultural appeal and reputation.

The Bois Noir Nature Reserve and the small mountain village of Mex (1,118 m) are popular destinations for hikers seeking extraordinary natural scenery.

As a student town, Saint-Maurice welcomes hundreds of young people every day, who walk through its streets on their way to the Abbey College, the Regional Lower Secondary School (Cycle d’Orientation Régional), or the University of Teacher Education (HEP).

Finally, thanks to its human scale and welcoming atmosphere, Saint-Maurice enjoys a vibrant local life, with numerous clubs and associations, shops, cafés, bars, terraces, and a wide variety of events held throughout the year.
