Bitsch
The municipality of Bitsch, one of the most advantageous in Valais in terms of tax, belongs to the Brig-Visp-Naters agglomeration and extends from 700 metres above sea level on the valley floor up to 2,000 metres above sea level. The scattered settlement consists of nine inhabited hamlets, the highest of them (Oberried) at an altitude of approximately 1,400m above sea level. While the hamlets on the valley floor consist mainly of apartment buildings, those on the hillside are composed mainly of detached houses or duplex apartments.
In recent years, the municipality has focused its attention on village development. In addition to the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway, there are local bus services to and from Brig every quarter of an hour. The “Red Mile” (Rote Meile) for pedestrian and cycle traffic leads through Naters towards Brig.
Sports enthusiasts will find plenty to keep them happy throughout the municipality: the renowned ski areas of Riederalp, Bettmeralp and Belalp are within easy reach, and in summer, Bitsch is the starting point for some well-known hikes, as well as a few hidden gems. Activities and facilities such as golf, tennis, squash, badminton, Vita-Parcours fitness trails, swimming, inline skating, thermal baths and fitness centres can be found in the neighbouring communities.
Another trump card in terms of quality of life is the KITA Gletscherfloh day care centre and lunchtime club. Bitsch is also an energy municipality: it was awarded the Swiss Solar Prize in 1997 and has been a recognised energy city since 2012.
Even though the municipality has exceeded the one-thousand mark in population, Bitsch remains a rural village close to the city.
