Vétroz

In the Middle Ages, Vétroz belonged to the Abbey of Saint-Maurice, whose cross still features on the municipality’s coat of arms today. Vétroz is a relatively young municipality and has been independent from its neighbouring municipality of Conthey only since 1862.

Following this separation, Vétroz developed into a lowland municipality covering around 1,000 hectares, stretching from the banks of the Rhône River to the mid-slopes of the hillside. The municipality was also able to retain the alpine settlements of Servaplana, located at the entrance to the mountain cirque of Derborence, up to an altitude of 2,468 metres.

Since 2004, Vétroz has maintained a friendship pact and twinning agreement with the French town of Beaumont-lès-Valence in the Drôme department.

Vétroz, the Capital of Amigne... and Much More

Vétroz is widely recognised as the birthplace of Amigne, a distinctive local wine variety that can be produced in different levels of sweetness. Since the early 1990s, a new generation of winegrowers and winemakers has helped establish the municipality as a respected name in the wine world.

This pursuit of quality is also the result of close cooperation rather than competition among the local wine producers. As a result, Vétroz became the second municipality in Valais to adopt a “Grands Crus” regulation for its wines.

Vétroz has experienced remarkable population growth, increasing from around 1,200 inhabitants in the 1960s to approximately 6,700 today. This growth can be attributed to its proximity to Sion and the commercial area of Conthey, its extensive lowland area, and above all its high quality of life.

Like its urban development, the local economy is largely driven by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Today, Vétroz is home to 316 companies and self-employed businesses, providing employment for around 1,500 people.

As Vétroz evolves from a traditional village into a dynamic small town, the municipality is committed to developing its infrastructure in a balanced and sustainable manner. Current priorities include expanding after-school childcare services, modernising the wastewater treatment plant, redesigning the village centre, and implementing measures to enhance protection against natural hazards along the western streams.
