Raron

The municipality and district capital consists of the villages of Raron and St. German. The quiet and sunny location of the two villages ensures outstanding living conditions.

Situated close to Visp, Raron offers an alternative to living in an urban centre and has good public transport connections and direct access to roads. The picturesque, sunny and friendly village of St. German is now mainly known for its winegrowing. As a local recreation area, the municipality of Raron also offers extensive hiking trails and a choice of active sporting and cultural clubs.

Alongside its grand historic mansions, modest agricultural structures, modern residential buildings and businesses old and new, there are lots of other places of interest in the municipality, including:

  • St. Romanus castle church
  • The grave of Rainer Maria Rilke at the south wall of the castle church
  • The rock-hewn church of St. Michael
  • The ninth-century village church of St. German

As the history of Raron shows, the district capital was very important and influential in days gone by. Thanks to its many assets, “Raronia prudens” (the clever Raron) remains attractive today and is a popular place to live with almost 2,000 residents.
