Known as the “village of knights”, Niedergesteln is home to 700 residents and is situated on the southern edge of the UNESCO Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch World Heritage Site. The municipality stretches as far as the Wilerhorn, which sits at the end of the wildly romantic Jolital valley. The historic buildings, alleys and squares are maintained with great skill and attention to detail. The “Wefahüs”, whose basic structure dates back to the 13th or 14th century, is one of the oldest residential buildings in the canton of Valais.

The “Baggilla”, a former quarry lake, is an inviting place to while away the time in summer. A hike along the bisse irrigation canals on the BLS south ramp passes over a suspension bridge and offers thrilling views into the wild Joli gorge. The Ritterweg path features nine wooden statues and tells the story of the von Turn family, who shaped the history of Upper Valais during the Middle Ages. Make the climb up the Ritterweg to the ruins of Gestelnburg castle for a wonderful view over the Rhone Valley and the chance to cross the ice-age cave known as the “Feschtiloch”.

The valley municipality is home to three restaurants and a village shop with a wide selection of useful products. Situated close to the agglomeration of Brig-Visp-Naters and offering a range of other services, Niedergesteln is an ideal place to live.
