Saas-Balen

Saas-Balen marks the entrance to the Saas valley. In addition to its main settlement, the municipality also includes Saas-Niedergut, Saas-Bidermatten and part of Saas-Tamatten. It enjoys excellent transport links: the valley floor (Visp) is 25 minutes away and the world-famous tourist resort of Saas-Fee is 15 minutes away.

Saas-Balen developed from a typical farming and trade village into an idyllic tourist destination. Nowadays, it is a successful blend of old properties, new houses, farms and abundant natural surroundings. The Fellbach river and its waterfall make for an impressive natural spectacle: in winter, the river is frozen under a blanket of ice, and in summer, the waterfall returns in full force. In terms of architectural landmarks, there is the round church, which was built in 1812. The unique church and townscape of Saas-Bidermatten feature in the Swiss Inventory of Cultural Property of National and Regional Significance.

The village is home to a number of very active clubs and societies, and if there’s something that needs to be done, everybody pitches in. The wide choice of clubs adds variety to residents’ leisure time and ensures the municipality is well known even in other regions. The village’s ski lift, ice skating rink, cross-country skiing trail, football pitch with children’s playground, and gymnasium are the cornerstones of its leisure infrastructure. Two restaurants, a village butcher’s and a village shop with a post office round out the services on offer in the municipality.
