Ergisch

The gateway to the Turtmanntal valley, Ergisch and the Obermatten Alpine foothills have retained their original character and diverse traditions. New buildings have been harmoniously integrated with old Valais houses, stables and barns. Recent builds testify to the fact that there are young families amongst the municipality’s residents. Primary school pupils attend classes in the neighbouring municipality of Turtmann, while orientation school students have been making the journey to Gampel for a number of years now.

The village has its own shop, which is popular amongst local residents and holidaymakers alike. The hospitality at Restaurant Obermatt, the village’s only restaurant, is another highlight. The restaurant was completely renovated in 2014 and is now a modern business that has preserved its original style and traditional cuisine.

The municipality’s central location also deserves special mention: Brig and the cantonal capital Sion are both just over half an hour away. Throughout the year, locals and guests can escape into unspoilt natural surroundings and enjoy the exceptional view of the various mountain ranges, the Rhone Valley and the neighbouring Alpine villages. The vast Turtmanntal-Augstbordregion hiking area is highly popular in summer, and the Ergischer Wasserleite trail along the bisse irrigation systems is a true insider hiking tip.

Most of the municipal area is used for agriculture, and the many part-time farmers who keep sheep, goats, and Fleckvieh and Eringer cattle have helped shape its landscape.
