Simplon

This mountain municipality with traditional flagstone roofs lies on the south side of the Simplon Pass and is about half an hour’s drive from Brig. Simplon’s history has been shaped by the pass, which connects Brig and Domodossola. The famous merchant Kaspar von Stockalper used the route for his business dealings, and it was also travelled by Napoleon many years later.

The village centre is included in the Federal Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites. The surrounding landscape is unique and the well-kept agricultural area is home to a diverse flora and fauna. Farming is an important source of employment in this mountain municipality. There are also commercial enterprises such as construction, carpentry, and transport companies. The power plant in Gondo, the forest division, the cantonal road maintenance service and the army also provide permanent jobs.

Primary school education is still offered within the municipality itself. The Simplon region offers interesting activities for tourists in an extensive hiking and mountaineering area with inviting restaurants.
