Naters
Naters offers excellent quality of life: it is a community to work in and a place to call home. With more than 150 associations and cooperatives, the municipality is particularly active when it comes to clubs. A wide range of sports, leisure, arts and cultural activities are on offer, and the recreation areas around the village are exceptional.
Geographically speaking, Naters lies in the middle of Upper Valais and is easily accessible via the Lötschberg and Simplon tunnels. Naters is only a five-minute walk from the international border station of Brig. It is also connected to the local bus network on the valley floor and to Blatten, Birgisch and Mund via the PostBus.
The municipality is part of the Brig-Visp-Naters agglomeration and has about 10,000 inhabitants. Although Naters reached the population threshold for a city for the first time in 2016, it still prefers to call itself the “biggest village in Valais”. Naters is also the municipality that covers the greatest altitude difference in Switzerland. The area extends from 660m above sea level, over the Natischerberg to the village of Blatten (1,327m above sea level), up to Belalp (2,094m above sea level), and on to the 4,195-metre high Aletschhorn. There are numerous small hamlets on the Natischerberg that are inhabited all year round. In 2013, the villages of Birgisch and Mund joined the municipality. Mund also cultivates the precious spice saffron: the “red gold” probably found its way there from Spain via France in the 14th century.
