Brig-Glis
Urban sophistication, cosy village life and rural tranquillity aren’t mutually exclusive – they actually complement each other. With their local idiosyncrasies and charming contrasts, the towns of Brig, Glis, Gamsen and Brigerbad contribute to the unmistakable character of the city-municipality of Brig-Glis. The fact that the population has grown to over 13,000 since 1990 testifies to the high standard of living and the quality of housing. Other advantages including quiet, well-kept neighbourhoods, the unspoilt mountain landscape and a variety of sports and leisure facilities have also played their part in the municipality’s growth.
It is no coincidence that Brig-Glis is the heart of Upper Valais: as a services centre, university city and traffic hub, it is as popular with visitors as it is with the locals. Since the opening of the Simplon Tunnel in 1906, the development of the city into a services centre has run parallel to the development of its transport connections. Today, around 80% of the resident population works in the service sector. Brig-Glis is an important traffic hub where international road and rail networks intersect.
The city, whose major landmark is the magnificent Stockalper Palace with its extensive park, radiates pure joie de vivre. It is a historic university city that hosts thousands of students and has a particularly active cultural life: theatre performances, concerts and exhibitions are all part of the daily programme of events. An excursion to the picturesque village neighbourhoods of Glis, Gamsen and Brigerbad provides a contrast to fast-paced city life.
